Ex-guerrilla elected president
SAO PAULO, Brazil – A former Marxist guerrilla who was tortured and imprisoned during Brazil’s long dictatorship was elected Sunday as the first female president of Latin America’s biggest nation, a country in the midst of a rapid economic and political rise.
A statement from the Supreme Electoral Court, which oversees elections, said governing party candidate Dilma Rousseff won the election.
With nearly all ballots counted, Rousseff had 56 percent of the vote compared to just under 44 percent for her centrist rival, Jose Serra, the electoral court said.
In a 25-minute victory speech to jubilant supporters in Brasilia, Rousseff, 62, said that her first promise was to “honor the women” of Brazil and that she hoped her win would allow “fathers and mothers to look their daughters in the eyes and say, ‘Yes, a woman can.’ ”
Corpse found in burned car in Mexico
CHILPANCINGO, Mexico – A missing Canadian businessman’s rental car was found completely burned with a corpse in the trunk on Sunday, police in southern Mexico reported.
Investigators are working to determine if it is the body of Daniel Dion, who was last seen about a week ago in the Pacific coast resort city of Acapulco.
One of the vehicle’s license plates was not burned in the fire, which allowed police to identify it as Dion’s white Jetta, according to Guerrero state Investigative Police director Fernando Monreal.
The car was discovered on a road in Zumpango del Rio, just north of the state capital of Chilpancingo. The town is about 80 miles from Acapulco, also in Guerrero state.
Mexican authorities say Dion has worked in Acapulco for several years with a company that employs inmates making bags from recycled materials.
