Religion notebook: Churches plan craft sales and bazaars

The first Saturday in November is traditionally a very busy day in churches throughout the area. This weekend is the one chosen for holiday bazaars and craft sales.

• At Audubon Park United Methodist Church, 3908 N. Driscoll Blvd., the church will present its holiday bazaar Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Items for sale include crafts, baked goods, books and “precious pass-ons.” There will also be a silent auction and refreshments.

Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 2733 W. Northwest Blvd., will present its fall bazaar and bake sale for its missions Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The sale will include vintage jewelry, house plants, baby quilts, dried flowers and hand-knitted slippers.

There will also be peanut brittle, fair trade coffees and teas and hand-made necklaces from Uganda.

• The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., will present its annual Fall Food Bazaar Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will include a chicken or vegetarian yakisoba bento box lunch for $10, senbei for $3.50, sushi, mochi and baked goods.

Pre-orders are recommended, as the church often sells out of the lunches.

• The women’s group at Fowler United Methodist Church, 3928 N. Howard, will present its “Lord of the Harvest” Bazaar and Luncheon Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 316 E. 24th Ave., will present its annual bazaar Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Items for sale include quality secondhand items, crafts, specialty gift baskets, and a raffle.

There will also be lefse, candy, cookies, pies and breads for sale.

St. John’s Lutheran Church, 223 S. Hallett St., Medical Lake, will present its annual bazaar and rummage sale Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be homemade German sausage for sale, as well as apple cider, baked goods, lefse and craft items.

Lunch and supper will be served both days and take-out meals are available.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 639 Elm St., Cheney, will present its Holiday Bazaar and Luncheon Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be crafts, baked goods, holiday decorations and white elephant items. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include soups, a roll and a beverage.

Guests can also guess the weight of a pumpkin or a squash and the winners can take it home.

Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ, 411 S. Washington, will host its Seventh Annual Christmas Market and Bazaar Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

There will be early-bird specials from 8:30 to 10 a.m. with free coffee and muffins, live music, baked goods, raffle baskets, books, crafts, an artists market and crafts for the kids.

Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for $7 for adults and $3 for children 10 and younger.

Concert

Sunrise Church of Christ, 4718 N. Ash St., will host a concert by Leon Patillo Ministries Sunday at 6 p.m.

Patillo is a former singer for Santana and has been involved in his musical ministry for 20 years, performing at churches, festivals, functions radio and television.

Cooking and show

Spokane Central Seventh-day Adventist Church, 804 W. Spofford, will present a live vegetarian and cooking show Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

Chef Mark Anthony will cook and discuss the topics, “the Greatest New Healthcare Solutions,” “Plant-Based Nutrition Program” and “Healthy Vegan Cooking.”

Donations will be appreciated for the food, printing and traveling expenses.

Seminars

The Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard, will host the Jesus Seminar, “Christian Origins: Other Voices Beyond the Canon,” Friday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Friday session will include speakers Marvin Meyer, co-chair of the department of religious studies at Chapman University, and Perry Kea, chairperson of the philosophy and religion department at the University of Indianapolis. The two will discuss “other voices” of Christianity including Mary of Magdala.

During the Saturday morning session from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Meyer will discuss Judas Thomas, better known as “Doubting” Thomas, and Kea will take a look at the relationship between the Apostle Paul and women.

The two will discuss the current work the Jesus Seminar is conducting on Christian origins and answer questions from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

The cost to attend is $75 for all three sessions and $50 for additional family members. The individual sessions are $20 for Friday and $30 for each session on Saturday.

St. Patrick Catholic School, 2706 E. Queen, will present “Mr. John Pelle’s Famous Spaghetti Dinner,” Sunday from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Pelle is a longtime member of Spokane’s Italian American Club and an immigrant to the United States who spent time during World War II in an internment camp.

The cost to attend is $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 through 12 and children younger than 6 can eat for free.
