Jamaica’N Me Homesick #1
Every so often we are given a chance to make a difference. Two weeks ago I was presented with one such opportunity, and even though it scares me a little, I’m going for it.
Today I am heading to Jamaica to work with a group of open-hearted volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of Jamaican children. During the school week I will spend 8 hours each day with kids, teachers and principals in rural island schools, helping volunteer American teachers share their lessons with the local children and school staff. Lessons include reading, music, art, physical fitness and computer skills. The literacy rate in Jamaica is about 45% among children, and 20% among adults … Empowering children through education is one of the greatest ways to give them hope for a bright future, and I am so proud to take part in this effort!
Why am I telling you this? Well, even though I’ll be on an amazing island, seeing and doing and learning incredible things, I’ll be missing fabulous things here at home (my boys, my dog, my friends, my Food Network to name a few). So, for the next week or so I’ll be sharing a series entitled: Jamaica’N Me Homesick , where I’ll fill you in on some of the cool things I’ll be missing while I’m on the island.
For now, I bid you adieu. And I ask that you let me live locally, vicariously, through you. Get out there. Do things. Keep me posted.
This volunteer program, SuperKids, is part of Great Shape! Inc ., a non-profit humanitarian organization with a local volunteer office. Check them out online to learn more about all the awesome things they do.
