Area roundup: CCS women blank Peninsula in playoffs
Lateashea Currie scored three goals and Shaylie Barcellos recorded the shutout as Community Colleges of Spokane defeated host Peninsula 5-0 to open NWAACC women’s soccer playoffs at Port Angeles, Wash.
Briana Kerley and Tabitha Grow added one goal and one assist apiece for the Sasquatch (11-5-3). CCS will play at Everett (13-3-1) at noon Saturday in the quarterfinals.
• Gonzaga senior midfielder Sheridan Jones was named to the All-West Coast Conference second team. Senior midfielder Catherine Cullen, redshirt junior defender Elle Sweeney and freshman forward Cassie Geerdts received honorable mention honors.
• Junior goalkeeper Callie Bergstrom (Mt. Spokane High), junior defender Anisa Babar, senior midfielder Sidonia Davin and junior forward Sarah Berentson made the All-Northwest Conference first team for Whitworth. Sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Grow (Lewis and Clark High) and senior midfielder Elizabeth Mattila made the second team. Junior forward Cory Druffel (Pullman High), sophomore midfielder Kelsey Griswold and senior forward Molly Moore were honorable mention.
Volleyball
Kelsey Kurtz had 39 assists and 13 digs as CC Spokane (30-9, 12-2) completed its NWAACC regular season with a 3-1 win over Big Bend (11-25, 1-13) at Spokane Falls CC.
Joni Nagy added 11 kills for the Sasquatch, who finished second in the East Region. CCS will open the NWAACC tournament at 2 p.m. next Thursday in Gresham, Ore., against West No. 3 Highline or Clark.
Men’s soccer
Josh Strasser scored twice as host Bellevue (12-4-2) blanked CC Spokane 3-0 in an NWAACC playoff opener. CCS finished 10-7-4.
• Junior defender Nate Spangler, junior midfielder Justin Meyer, senior midfielder Travis Gutierrez and junior midfielder Cameron Bushey (Mead High) made the All-Northwest Conference first team for Whitworth. Junior defenders Dion Coxe and Nic Shaw and sophomore forward Kekoa Mountcastle made the second team. Freshman forward Andrew French and junior goalkeeper Kyle Novak were honorable mention.
Girls soccer
• State 2A: Sammi Hilsiker scored at 23 and 30 minutes to lift East Valley (14-6) to a 3-0 road win over East Valley (Yakima) in a state opener. Catie MacFarlene recorded her fourth shutout in the Knights’ last five matches. Amanda Bliesner added one goal and one assist. EV will host Prosser at 1 p.m. Saturday in a quarterfinal.
• State 1A: McKenzie Andringa scored on a free kick in the 89th minute as the La Salle Lightning defeated the visiting Newport Grizzlies 1-0 in double overtime in a state opener. Adrienne Seger had eight saves for the Grizzlies, who finished the season 15-4-1. La Salle will host Lakeside (14-4-1) in Saturday’s quarterfinal.
