Sentenced Former NFL player David Meggett was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday after his conviction in a Charleston, S.C., court on charges of criminal sexual conduct and burglary, authorities said. Meggett was convicted in a case involving an encounter with a college student at her house in North Charleston in January 2009, according to authorities.
Traded The Oakland Athletics boosted their offense and added a reliable outfielder, acquiring David DeJesus from the Kansas City Royals for right-hander Vin Mazzaro and minor league lefty Justin Marks. DeJesus batted .318 with five homers and 37 RBIs in 91 games with Kansas City this year. He was sidelined for the final two months following right thumb surgery.
Honored Cincinnati third baseman Scott Rolen won his eighth Gold Glove, one of three Reds players to be honored following the team’s first playoff appearance in 15 years. Second baseman Brandon Phillips and pitcher Bronson Arroyo also were National League recipients announced by Rawlings. St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina and Philadelphia outfielder Shane Victorino both garnered their third Gold Glove in a row. Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez joined Arroyo as first-time winners. Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols won for the second time, and Houston center fielder Michael Bourn was a repeat winner.

Reconsidered Ethiopian long-distance great Haile Gebrselassie is reassessing his sudden retirement, and his manager hopes he will run in the 2012 London Olympics. Jos Hermens said that a knee injury that forced Gebrselassie out of last Sunday’s New York Marathon left him in an emotional state and led to the rash announcement.
