Area roundup: Powell’s record helps Zags end skid

Senior libero Allyson Powell broke a 24-year-old mark Thursday while helping the Gonzaga volleyball team break a streak that may have seemed as long.

Powell had 25 digs to set the team’s single-season record as the Bulldogs (3-25, 1-10 West Coast Conference) dispatched visiting Loyola Marymount (15-12, 6-5) 3-1 to snap a 23-match losing streak.

Powell’s 450 digs this season surpassed the 436 collected by Linda Bushinksi in 1986.

• Ashley Lichtenberg hit .429 with 14 kills as Northern Colorado (22-5, 13-1 Big Sky Conference) swept Eastern Washington at Greeley, Colo.

Shelby Puckett had eight kills for the Eagles (7-17, 6-8), who took a step backward in their quest to make the Big Sky tournament.

• Kayleigh Giddens and Rocio Gutierrez combined for 36 kills as New Mexico State (17-10, 11-2) locked up the No. 2 seed to the Western Athletic Conference tournament with a 3-1 win at Idaho.

Allison Walker had 17 kills and 12 digs for the Vandals (12-11, 7-5), which needs one win in its final three matches to make the WAC tourney.
