Book notes: ‘Early Spokane’ shows off city’s history

A new book of historical photos, “Early Spokane” by Don Popejoy and Penny Hutten (Arcadia Publishing, $21.99), will be available beginning Monday.

It’s part of Arcadia’s “Images of America” series, which specializes in paperback volumes of historical photos. It includes 200 images from the Spokane Public Library’s Northwest Room and many other collections.

You’ll see downtown panoramas, early street scenes and a heartbreaking photo of the elderly Chief Garry sitting by the Spokane River. All the photos are extensively captioned.

Popejoy is a sheriff of the Westerner’s Spokane Corral, a local history group. Hutten is deputy of the group.

Naomi Shihab Nye

The celebrated American poet Naomi Shihab Nye will be the next author in Gonzaga University’s Visiting Writers Series.

Nye was born in St. Louis of a Palestinian father and American mother, and grew up in both Jerusalem and Texas. She has won many of the most prestigious prizes in poetry over her career and has also written children’s books and nonfiction.

She is known for her dedication to social justice issues. In other words, she should be a stimulating and thought-provoking speaker.

Nye’s free talk will be Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. in Gonzaga’s Cataldo Globe Room. She will also conduct a public question-answer session at 12:15 p.m. that day in GU’s Foley Teleconference Room.

She will also deliver a free public reading Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Spokane Falls Community College, Spartan Theater, Building 5.

Warrior’s reflections

Retired Col. Mershan G. Shaddy, of Spokane, along with his wife Jane Shaddy, will present his new poetry collection, “Reflections of a Warrior and Dreamer,” today at 12:30 p.m. at Auntie’s Bookstore, 402 W. Main Ave.

Shaddy is a veteran of three wars: World War II, Korea and Vietnam. His work has been published by Army Magazine.

Proceeds from book sales will be donated to the Veterans Outreach Center.
