Football roundup: Talley drives East Valley High to win

Adam Talley eclipsed the 170-yard mark for the second time in four days, finishing with 173 rushing yards and a touchdown as East Valley (6-5) knocked off Clarkston (6-4) in the first round of the State 2A football tournament Saturday in Clarkston.

The Knights took a 30-13 lead over their Great Northern League foe on Shane Quinn’s 2-yard TD run in the third quarter. They needed every bit of that 17-point lead as the Bantams scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth to close the lead to three.

EV had the answer, with Taylor Watkins hitting Joey Strehlou for a 39-yard TD pass, giving EV its final nine-point advantage.

“We were up 30-13 and were able to hold them off,” East Valley coach Adam Fisher said. “They battled back a bit, but the better team won, that’s for sure.”

Watkins threw for 177 yards and two TDs for the Knights. Brady Arone led Clarkston, passing for 227 yards and three TDs in the loss.

EV will play Prosser in the state quarterfinals after the Mustangs (10-1) beat Othello 14-6 in Prosser.
