Whitworth Pirates win big in basketball finale

David Riley scored 26 points to lead 16th-ranked Whitworth to an 86-67 win over Luther (0-4) in the final contest of the Surf’s Up Classic on Saturday in Honolulu.

The Pirates improved to 4-0 overall and won the tournament with a 2-0 record after host California Lutheran was knocked off by Northwest Conference member Pacific (Ore.).

Riley opened the game with a 3-pointer and the Pirates never trailed.

Whitworth grabbed a 22-13 lead on a 3-pointer by Jack Loofburrow with just over nine minutes to play in the first half, then stretched that lead to as many as 17 points – at 37-20 – on a 3-pointer by Wade Gebbers.

Whitworth continued to pull away, opening a 68-48 lead on another 3-pointer by Riley, and eventually led by as many as 28 points on a 3-pointer by Chase Ramey with 5:40 to play.

Loofburrow scored 21 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds off the bench and Michael Taylor added 17 points and seven boards, leading the Bucs with five assists.

CCS 99, Lower Columbia 90: Preston Wynne scored a game-high 26 points and shot 7 of 13 from the 3-point line to lead the Sasquatch (2-1) to a win over the Red Devils (1-1) in the semifinals of the Red Devil Classic in Longview, Wash.

CCS plays Yakima Valley today at 4 p.m. in the championship game.
