Area roundup: Spurgeon called up to NHL
Defenseman Jared Spurgeon, one of the Spokane Chiefs’ leading scorers last season, was called up by the Minnesota Wild for their National Hockey League game in Calgary on Monday night.
Spurgeon, who turned 21 on Sunday, the day he got the news, had nine points in 21 games for Houston of the AHL, eight in the last eight games.
Although he was drafted by the New York Islanders, Spurgeon never signed. He was invited to Minnesota’s camp this fall and signed as a free agent Sept. 22.
