The Slice: Talk about bursting a bubble on a good deed

Someone at the airport walked off and left an iPod music player.

But an honest person found it. So a friend of mine who works for an airline made an announcement.

He was vague about the nature of the item. But soon a woman in her early 20s approached and asked if anyone had turned in an iPod.

She was able to describe the color of the trim and offered particulars about the earphones. So my friend was pleased to hand it over.

You’d think she would be pleased, right?

Well, here’s what she said: “What about the pack of gum that was with it?”

Home field: “We really love the new synthetic football/soccer fields at the Dwight Merkel complex, but not the millions of rubber granules that are used to anchor the turf,” wrote Teresa Lukens.

Those little bits wind up inside her daughter’s soccer cleats. And those sports shoes end up at home, where the tiny pieces of the field await the vacuum cleaner.

Lukens thinks the city needs to insist that athletes empty their shoes before leaving the field.

If not, she fears there won’t be much of the field left before long.

Extended forecast: “Every morning, my husband and I drink our coffee watching the news, mostly to see Grace Pena doing the weather, because she reminds us of our daughter,” wrote Susan Guffin.

“The last couple of days, someone has filled in for Grace. And this morning my husband asked, ‘Why can’t they just film her ahead of time, before her days off, so we can still see her?’

“I poured him another cup of coffee and told him to think about that.”

Ten, ten, ten: “My sister, Linda Bloom, and I are wondering if anyone else is planning for 10/10/10 like we are,” wrote Diana Henke. “It’s the 100th anniversary of the exact day our grandfather, Bill Savas, entered the United States from Sela, Greece at 18 years old.”

Slice answer (name for a local winery): Jan Barrett wrote, “We always thought someone should start the Chateau Palouse Lautrec.”

Today’s Slice question: What route/destination do you suggest when someone says “Let’s go for a drive”?
