Area roundup: Whitworth tops Linfield
Cory Druffel scored the winning goal in the 105th minute of the second overtime as Whitworth (7-3, 5-1) earned a key Northwest Conference women’s soccer victory, 1-0 against Linfield (6-3, 4-1) on Saturday, to overtake the Wildcats for first place in the NWC.
• Kristin DeCroix took a pass from Demi Wignot in the box and kicked home the winning goal in the 95th minute as the North Idaho Cardinals (7-2-1) edged No. 14 Iowa Western CC (5-3-2) 3-2 in overtime at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyo.
• Shaylie Barcellos recorded a shutout and Nikayla Caudill scored in the 19th minute of play to give the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (7-0-1) a 1-0 victory against the Shoreline CC Dolphins (3-4-1) in Seattle.
Men’s soccer
Kekoa Mountcastle scored in the 12th minute and Jesse Retan scored 10 minutes later and Whitworth (6-2-1, 3-1-1) blanked Linfield (3-5-1, 2-3) 3-0 in Northwest Conference play in McMinnville, Ore.
• Andrew Mastronardi scored in the 83rd minute, allowing Community Colleges of Spokane (6-3-1) to tie Shoreline CC (0-6-2) 1-1 in Seattle.
Cross country
Julia Veseth led the Idaho women with a fourth-place finish in a time of 17 minutes, 37.18 seconds as the Vandals took the team title with 55 points at the Charles Bowles Invite in Salem, Ore. Hannah Kiser was sixth for UI in 17:42.20.
The Whitworth women were seventh behind Tonya Turner, who was 12th.
Barry Britt led the Vandals men to a fourth-place finish in the 8,000-meter run, with his 24:00.48 good for seventh place. Whitworth took seventh.
• Ruby Roberts finished third in 17:54 and Washington State’s women tallied 49 points to take second at the Montana Invitational at Missoula. The Cougars finished behind Montana (33 points) to take second.
In the men’s race, Eastern Washington (86 points) and Gonzaga (91) finished third and fourth, respectively, with EWU’s Kyle King taking seventh in 25:20.
Volleyball
Alex Jupiter had 19 kills with just three attack errors and No. 5 USC (13-1, 2-1) rallied from its first Pac-10 loss of the season to beat Washington State (6-8, 0-4) 3-0 in Pullman.
• Kindra Carlson had 13 kills and seven digs as No. 10 Washington (14-1, 3-1) swept Pac-10 foe UCLA (11-3, 1-2) 3-0 in Seattle.
• Idaho (7-8, 2-2) avenged Wednesday’s loss to Boise State (14-4, 2-2), winning 3-1 in Moscow.
• Natalie Loos had 10 kills and five blocks and Saint Mary’s (10-5, 2-0) swept Gonzaga (2-16, 0-2) 3-0 in West Coast Conference play in Moraga, Calif.
• Kaimie Rocha had 15 kills and Amanda Grumbach had two kills and two blocks in Whitworth’s match-clinching 15-6 win as the Pirates (6-5, 3-1) edged Linfield (5-7, 3-1) 3-2 in Northwest Conference play in McMinnville, Ore.
• Gabriella Rifilato had 20 kills and Brenna Peterson added 19 as North Idaho (16-5, 3-0 SWAC) swept Colorado Northwestern (1-15, 0-4) in Rangely, Colo.
Junior hockey
Joel Stewart and Mitch Fowler were among five Braves who scored and goalie Garrett Barr stopped 40 of 43 shots to lead Spokane to a 5-3 road win over Castlegar in KIJHL play.
