In brief: Wade begins recovery from ailing hamstring

Basketball: Dwyane Wade was off the court, perfecting the art of taking scoop shots from underneath a side basket and getting them to fall through the net without touching the rim.

That’ll be the extent of his basketball work for the next week or two.

Wade’s ailing right hamstring was no better Wednesday, one day after his preseason debut was cut short following a stint that lasted a mere 3 minutes, 17 seconds. Sore when he went to bed after the game, sore when he got up Wednesday morning, sore as the day went along.

“Today is the first day of the road to recovery,” Wade said as his teammates finished practice.

• Two Pistons hurt in opener: The Detroit Pistons were hit hard by injuries in their first preseason game.

Detroit forward Jonas Jerebko tore his right Achilles tendon and guard Terrico White broke his right foot in Tuesday’s night exhibition in Miami. Both will have surgery Friday.

Jerebko is expected to be out for five to six months, meaning he might miss the entire season.

• Girlfriend claims Dunn’s innocence: The girlfriend of Baylor star LaceDarius Dunn denied that he broke her jaw and said she wants authorities to drop an aggravated assault charge against him for what she called an accident.

Lacharlesla Edwards, 21, also pleaded with Baylor coach Scott Drew to reinstate the Bears’ leading scorer to the roster.

Japanese star Ozaki makes hall of fame

Golf: Jumbo Ozaki finally gets to celebrate in America when he is inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Ozaki, who won more than 100 tournaments and led the Japan Golf Tour money list 12 times, was elected through the international ballot.

He will be inducted May 9 at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla.

• Westwood cuts back on overseas play: Lee Westwood said he will not take up PGA Tour membership next year, only coming to America for the majors, World Golf Championships and occasional tournaments.

The 37-year-old Englishman said he will remain based in Europe despite a chance to compete for the FedEx Cup and the $10 million bonus.

Knee injury ends Williams’ season

Tennis: Venus Williams is done for the season because of a left knee injury that sidelined her for most of the second half of 2010. In a statement, the seven-time Grand Slam champion said she is “very disappointed to announce that I will be unable to play” in the WTA Tour Championships at the end of October, and the Fed Cup final between the United States and Italy at San Diego in November.

Montana State receives $1 million donation

Miscellany: Montana State University announced a $1 million donation for the expansion of Bobcat Stadium made in honor of former Montana State football player and coach Sonny Holland.

• U.S. women tie with China: Alex Morgan scored her first international goal in the 83rd minute to give the United States a 1-1 soccer draw with China in an exhibition game at Chester, Pa.

• Cyclist hit with lifetime ban: Former U.S. national pro cycling champion Kirk O’Bee received a lifetime suspension for a second doping offense.
