Fairgrounds earn spot on national historic register

MISSOULA – The National Park Service has listed the Missoula County Fairgrounds on the National Register of Historic Places. County officials received notification last week about the nearly century old facility containing about 46 acres. The fairgrounds started in 1914 a mile southwest of town. The area is now surrounded by commercial, educational and other development. Philip Maechling, the county’s historic preservation officer, said the listing means the county is eligible for funding that sometimes becomes available for historic sites.
