upshot: The Republicans say Allred, if elected, would impose a
far-reaching sales tax increase by getting rid of tax exemptions on
everything from school lunches to car repairs to farm equipment to
“church bake sales.” Does this mean the GOP is planning to hire
this guy
as their next spokesman? Be that as it may, churches are the beneficiary of
a tax exemption
that covers meals sold to its members at church functions. It’s among
the state’s myriad sales tax exemptions, and it’s projected to be worth a
whopping $13,000 in 2010-11 — a crumb at the buffet table of exemptions
worth some
$1.75 billion a year
