Religion notebook: Church serving Japanese food
Highland Park United Methodist Church, 611 S. Garfield St., will present a Japanese bazaar and teriyaki dinner Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The event will include a dinner of barbecued chicken, rice, salad and squash.
There will be handcrafted items, baked goods, Senbei, California sushi, produce, Spam sushi, and the church cookbook for sale.
Tickets are $12, and the church asks that you purchase or reserve your tickets in advance.

Shadle Park Presbyterian Church, 5508 N. Alberta St., will not hold its usual services Sunday to participate in “Faith in Action: Don’t Just Go to Church.”
Church members will instead participate in community outreach projects including making nursing home visits, creating thank-you trays for local emergency service workers, volunteering at the Mission Community Outreach Center, putting together care packages for Support Our Troops and more.

Veterans event
Sacred Heart Church, 219 E. Rockwood Blvd., will host “Welcome Veterans Home,” a daylong event for veterans from any era, families, friends, faith community members, and clergy and pastoral ministers Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The day will be broken up into 90-minute seminars for each group of people attending.

Special services
• St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St., will present “Earth: Ground of Our Being,” a Celtic celebration, today at 7 p.m.
The service will feature musicians David Sharp and Judith Brownhawk. It will also include a Christian service of communion, sung chants, Celtic prayers and music.
A potluck reception will follow the service.

• Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church , 312 W. Hawthorne Road, will offer a healing and wholeness service Tuesday at 7 p.m.

• The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., will present an Eitaikyo Muen Hoyo Memorial Service Sunday at 3 p.m.
The service honors all the deceased members of churches who had dedicated themselves to the spiritual.
The service will be led by Rinban Don Castro of the Seattle Betsuin.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Spokane, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive, will host a Spokane Buddhist dharma group from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Nov. 22.
The classes will offer meditation instruction and practice, and will emphasize Buddhist methods for working with difficult emotions such as anger, jealousy and craving.
Anyone of any faith can attend. No registration is required and the classes are free to attend.

Catholic Charities of Spokane, 12 E. Fifth St., will present an informational coffee time to learn about the volunteer opportunities throughout its organization Tuesday from 10 to 11:15 a.m.
Catholic Charities programs include Bernadette Place, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Catholic Relief Services, Childbirth and Parenting Alone, the Christmas Bureau, counseling, the House of Charity, the Parish Social Ministry, Refugee and Immigration Services, the regional offices, Respect Life, St. Anne’s Children and Family Center, St. Margaret’s Shelter, senior and family housing and senior services.
