Dodd house to be added to register

EAST CENTRAL – U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Spokane Mayor Mary Verner, Allyson Brooks, the state historic preservation officer, and representatives from Spokane’s Historic Preservation Office will celebrate the addition of the Sonora Smart Dodd House, 603 S. Arthur St., to the National Register of Historic Places on Friday at 10 a.m. A reception will follow the dedication.

The Sonora Smart Dodd House was built in 1913. It has gained importance in the areas of architecture and social history as a fine example of a Craftsman-style bungalow. It is one of only three buildings here to receive the additional designation of being “nationally significant.” The Looff Carrousel in Riverfront Park received its designation in 1977. The other is the Hutton Building, 9 S. Washington St., which received its designation in 1983.

Sonora Smart Dodd founded Father’s Day in Spokane. The 100-year celebration was held this summer.

For information on Friday’s celebration, call the Historic Preservation Office at (509) 625-6543. For more information on the house, visit historicspokane.org.
