In brief: Comedy event to benefit RiteCare
AIRWAY HEIGHTS – RiteCare Spokane’s fall comedy event will be held at Northern Quest Casino, 100 N. Hayford Road, on Oct. 22. The VIP reception begins at 6 p.m. General admission is at 6:30.
The show is based on author Deanna Davis’s latest book, “Laugh, Cry, Eat Some Pie.” The special evening will also include a silent auction.
General admission tickets are $25 per person. VIP tickets are $75 per person and include early admission, preferred seating, a gift bag, appetizers, dessert and services.

Theater group to rent out costumes
SPOKANE VALLEY – Just in time for Halloween, Theater Arts for Children will rent costumes for all ghosts, goblins and other assorted characters.
The theater, 10814 E. Broadway Ave., will be open Oct. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Oct. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. to pick out the perfect Halloween disguise. Rental prices for most costumes on the first Saturday are $15 per costume, with a $15 deposit. Prices on the second Saturday jump to $20 per costume, with a $20 deposit.
More elaborate costumes may be priced higher and may require a higher deposit. Deposits will be refunded after costumes are returned in good condition by Nov. 5.

Boys/Girls Clubs hosts breakfast
NEVADA/ LIDGERWOOD – On Tuesday, Boys & Girls Clubs of Spokane County will host the “Ride For the Brand” breakfast at the Northtown Club, 544 E. Providence Ave., from 7 to 9 a.m. The breakfast is part of the Boys & Girls Club’s One Campaign, which raises money to help continue to provide life-saving programs to more than 3,000 at-risk youth between the ages of 6-18 in Spokane.
The keynote speaker will be James Owen, author of “Cowboy Ethics: What Wall Street Can Learn from the Code of the West” and “Cowboy Values: Recapturing What America Once Stood For.”
The breakfast is free and open to the public, but reservations are required.

State offers tax workshop
RIVERSIDE – The Spokane office of the Washington State Department of Revenue, 1330 N. Washington St., will hold a free tax workshop for new and small-business owners on Wednesday, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Participants will learn about Washington excise taxes, reporting classifications, deductions, tax incentives, sales tax collection, and record-keeping requirements. Everyone who takes the workshop will receive a workbook and reference guide to Department of Revenue rules and regulations.

SPOKANE – The city of Spokane has expanded its underground sprinkler system program to include commercial properties, multifamily developments and planned unit developments, in addition to residential properties.
By installing or upgrading an existing underground sprinkler system with a “Smart” controller, commercial and multifamily water users are eligible to earn a credit up to $425. The credit for residential customers is as much as $375.

Dinner to support Honor Flight
LINCOLN HEIGHTS – The Harvard Park retirement community, 1616 E. 30th Ave., will host an Italian buffet dinner on Saturday at 5 p.m. to benefit the veterans Honor Flight program.
Honor Flight sends veterans to Washington D.C. so they can see memorials and be recognized for their service.
The public is invited to attend the community dinner. Cash donations will be accepted.
On Friday at 2 p.m., Harvard Park will have a free seminar on the Veterans Administration’s Aid and Attendance pension program. The program provides funds for eligible veterans and surviving spouses.

Youth commission hosts forum
RIVERSIDE – The 2010 Youth Issues Candidates’ Forum will be tonight, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Spokane City Council Chambers, City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. The event will be hosted by the Chase Youth Commission.
Candidates in the following races, participating in the forum include Legislative District 3 State Representative Pos. 1, Dave White and Andy Billig; Legislative District 3 State Representative Pos. 2, Timm Ormsby and Morgan Oyler; Legislative District 6 State Representative Pos. 2, John Driscoll; and Spokane County Commissioner, Bonnie Mager and Al French.

Following the forum, the Spokane County auditor’s office will assist teenagers with voting procedures, and the teenagers will cast their votes for the candidates of their choice. As part of this year’s mock election, students will get a chance to vote on the three initiatives – Children’s Investment Fund and Initiatives 1100 and 1107 – that are part of the discussion.
