Area roundup: Whitworth Pirates slip past Bruins in soccer

Cory Druffel scored in the fourth minute and the Whitworth women’s soccer team (11-4-1, 9-2-1) held the rest of the way, beating George Fox (3-9-3, 2-8-1) 1-0 to stay alive in the Northwest Conference title race in Spokane.

• Lateashea Currie scored the second of her two goals in the 90th minute to help Community Colleges of Spokane (8-3-3, 5-3-3) tie Yakima Valley CC (5-4-2, 5-4-2) 3-3 in Yakima.

• Lauren Bonck scored in the 35th minute on a free kick to lift Gonzaga’s club team to a 2-1 win over North Idaho College (10-4-2) in Spokane.

Men’s soccer

Kekoa Mountcastle’s goal in the 14th minute helped Whitworth (8-5-1, 5-4-1) ended a three-match losing skid with a 3-0 win over George Fox (0-11-2, 0-9-1) in Northwest Conference action in Spokane.

• Ryan Luke scored in the 88th minute to lift Portland (8-2-4, 5-1-1) to a 2-1 win over Gonzaga (4-10, 1-6) in WCC play in Portland.

Cross country

Anthony Brown finished in second place with a time of 25:10, leading the Community Colleges of Spokane men’s team to a third-place finish at the Lewis-Clark Invite at Hells Gate State Park in Lewiston. The Sasquatch women finished third with 88 points, led by Mikel Elliott’s time of 18:04, good for third.

Rowing

The Washington State women finished their first duel regatta of the season with a first-place finish in the varsity 8 race in a time of 17:01 at the Head of the Spokane Regatta in Spokane.

Hockey

Mitch Fowler scored two goals and the Spokane Braves (10-8) scored five first-period goals to beat Columbia River (3-10-0-2) 11-1 at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
