Mead takes district volleyball crown

Kaely Kight finished with 12 kills and Ellie Bilyeu added 14 digs as Mead defeated Central Valley 3-1 in the District 8 4A championship match Saturday at Mead.

Danika Christen added 17 assists as the Panthers advanced as the No. 1 seed to the regional tournament Saturday in Wenatchee. CV, led by 10 kills from Mikayla Ness and 26 assists by Sam Block, advances as the No. 2.

In other District 8 4A action, Mercedes Montoya tallied a match-high 15 kills and added 18 digs as Lewis and Clark eliminated Ferris from the postseason with a 3-1 victory at Mead. After losing the first set, the Tigers rallied to win the next three, advancing to regionals as the No. 3 seed from the GSL.

• District 8 3A: Jordan Schmerer led with 22 digs and Christine Mathison added nine kills as University eliminated Shadle Park, winning in straight sets at Mead. The Titans advanced as the No. 2 seed to regionals, playing Saturday at Rogers High School. … Mt. Spokane advances as the No. 1 seed from the GSL, playing host to the winner of the CBBN’s No. 2 and No. 4 teams.

• District 7 2A: Shaniqua Nilles tallied 27 kills and seven blocks while Aaliyah Ashley-Meek added 42 assists as West Valley outlasted Pullman 3-2 in the district title match at WSU in Pullman. The Eagles rallied from losing the fourth set 23-25 to win the fifth 15-10 to advance as the No. 1 seed to regionals. … Shelby Cheslek had eight kills and five blocks and Pullman advanced as the No. 2 seed to the regional tournament from the GNL with a 3-0 victory over Clarkston at WSU, eliminating the Bantams. Jenny Nakata tallied 21 kills over two matches for Pullman. … Earlier in tournament action, Clarkston defeated East Valley. WV and Pullman will play in regional action Saturday at University High School.

• District 7 1A: Joellee Buckner led with 14 assists and seven aces as Colville led from start to finish to sweep Newport in straight sets in the championship match at Mt. Spokane High School. Jacy Vining added seven kills for the Indians, who advance as the No. 1 team to regionals. Newport advances as the No. 2 team out of the district. … In a loser-out match to determine the third spot to the regional tournament, Kayley Watkins tallied 13 kills and Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) scored the last seven points in the fifth set to beat Freeman 3-2 at Mt. Spokane. Lexie Zappone added 22 assists and Savannah Rolston 22 digs for the Eagles, who play Cascade on Saturday at Freeman.
