In brief: Open house planned at EduCare

NORTHWEST – Transition’s EduCare will have a back-to-school open house on Sept. 16 at the Transitional Living Center, 3128 N. Hemlock St.

The open house will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. A short program will begin at 5:45 p.m.

School supplies are needed for the center’s students, including crayons, washable markers, glue sticks, backpacks, and construction and copy paper.

Supplies can be dropped off at Women’s Hearth, 920 W. Second Ave.; Miryam’s House, 1805 W. Ninth Ave.; Gonzaga University Law School; Garco Construction, 4114 E. Broadway Ave. or the Transitional Living Center.

Funds available for service groups

SPOKANE – The city of Spokane Community Development Department recently announced that public service funding applications are available for the 2011 fiscal year, from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. Up to $150,000 will be allocated among agencies that provide benefits to people of low and moderate incomes within the city limits.

Examples of eligible activities include child care, health care, crime prevention, substance abuse counseling, job training, community center operation and activities and recreation programs. To be eligible to receive funding, service providers must be 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations or public agencies.

Funds come from federal Community Development Block Grants that the City of Spokane receives annually through the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Applications may be obtained by contacting the City of Spokane Community Development Department at (509) 625-6325, located on the sixth floor of City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd. The application deadline is Sept. 16 at 4 p.m.
