Whitworth drops opener in soccer

Katelyn Kishkunas converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute Thursday to give 12th-ranked Wheaton a 2-1 women’s soccer win over Whitworth in the opening match of the Bob Baptista Invitational at Wheaton, Ill.

Ali Kopelman also scored for the Thunder, off a pass from Keri Shannon in the 18th minute.

Sarah Berentson scored on a penalty kick in the 36th minute to allow Whitworth to tie the match. Cory Druffel worked free in the box and drew the foul that led to Berentson’s kick.

Wheaton outshot Whitworth 25-14, including 17-7 in the second half. The Pirates’ Callie Bergstrom recorded six saves.

The match was a season opener for both teams.

Tanya Schmidt had a season-high 17 kills while hitting .516 to lead Santa Clara (4-1) to a 25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23 win over Idaho in the Pacific Tournament at Stockton, Calif.

Allison Walker and Alicia Milo combined for 31 kills for the Vandals (2-2). Cassie Hamilton added 16 digs.

Girls soccer

Kylie Gorton and Sarah Bloom scored two goals apiece to lift Moscow (3-1-1, 2-1 Inland Empire League) to a 4-2 win at Sandpoint (0-3, 0-1).

• Bonners Ferry’s Hailey Pruitt made five saves and St. Maries’ Chelsea Thaut had nine as the teams played a scoreless Intermountain League match at St. Maries (0-4-1, 0-2-1). The Badgers are 0-1-1 in league. … Also in the IML, Holly Hirst scored twice in the first half to give Priest River (2-0, 2-0) a 2-0 win at Kellogg (0-1, 0-1).

Boys soccer

Andre Zarate set up the tying goal at 77 minutes and scored the winner 2 minutes later to give Bonners Ferry (2-2, 1-0 IML) a 2-1 win at St. Maries (1-3-3, 1-1-1).
