Apartment fire displaces about 60 residents

Approximately 60 residents from an apartment complex on East South Riverton Avenue are displaced after an early morning fire. Spokane Fire Department responded to the fire at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, according to a release from the Spokane Fire Department. There is “extensive damage” to the third floor and 21 apartments. Avista shut down the power to the building. Firefighters evacuated the occupants with ladders and through exits of the three-story building. The American Red Cross Inland Northwest Chapter reported that 10 residents checked into the shelter they set up at Stevens Elementary School. The other residents are staying with family or friends. The fire department anticipated some of the residents would be able to return by Saturday afternoon. There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the fire department.
