Briefs: Gonzaga Prep, Ferris drop in to loser’s bracket
Frazier Krall tripled to lead off a four-run fourth inning Wednesday as the Lakeside Recovery Grays edged Gonzaga Prep 8-6 in Legion Junior State winner’s bracket play at G-Prep.
In a winner’s game at University High, Nathan Ruane struck out five and scattered seven hits as Richland defeated Ferris 6-1.
In loser-out play, Beau Magnuson struck out 12 and highlighted a seven-run sixth with a two-run double as Asotin County beat Foss 8-7 at G-Prep.
Also at G-Prep, Micael Fagion had two hits and two runs as Chehalis topped Mead 5-3.
At U-Hi, reliever Travis Seek pitched 32/3 hitless innings as the host team defeated Rainier 9-5 to remain in contention.
Golf
Chris Williams (University of Washington/Moscow High) shot a second consecutive 5-under-par 66 to take a three-stroke lead at the 109th Western Amateur Championship at North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill.
Williams, coming off a win at the Pacific Coast Amateur, had six birdies and one bogey.
Volleyball
Gonzaga University was tabbed for last place in the nine-team West Coast Conference in a preseason poll of WCC coaches.
The Zags, who lost four starters off a team that finished 1-13 in the WCC, received eight points.
Pepperdine, the top choice, received seven first-place votes and 62 points.
