Lake City wins in prep football opener

Bobby Traverse had four starts at quarterback last year for Lake City, filling in for the injured starter.

Naturally, Traverse was a tad tentative at times as a junior. It’s amazing what difference a year can make.

Traverse played with poise in the Timberwolves’ season opener Friday, completing 12 of 20 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns as Lake City handled the visiting Lakeland Hawks 46-21.

“I just had fun out there,” Traverse said. “Our (offensive) line did great. We ran those bubble screens and our receivers really blocked well. And when we run the option our receivers are really important. They did a great job.”

Lakeland played a competitive first half, pulling within 16-14 with 3:54 to go before halftime when Taylor Campbell hauled in a 12-yard touchdown pass from Eric Cooper.

The T-Wolves answered, though, with a seven-play drive culminating with a Levi Hewitt 3-yard TD run behind a pair of great blocks by Colton Houlihan and Chris Shennar with 1:16 to go before intermission.

LC took a 23-14 lead into halftime.

Before anyone could blink in the second half, LC, behind two of Traverse’s TD passes and a safety, built a 39-14 lead.

“I was really pleased with the way they opened up,” LC coach Van Troxel said. “Most importantly the way it meant something to the seniors. To me that’s what they showed, they played with a little passion, a little energy. I was really pleased with the leadership out of Bobby. He made a half dozen changed calls at the line of scrimmage and almost all of them worked.”

Lakeland senior QB Cooper, back in his second year as a starter, led the Hawks up and down the field a couple of times effectively. He completed 14 of 21 passes for 154 yards and one TD.

“Our kids were competitive in the first half,” Lakeland coach Tim Kiefer said. “The special teams mistakes … we obviously committed a few on the punt. We had two blocked punts and two safeties and when that stuff happens and you’re playing a team like Lake City it’s not going to bode well for you.”

Coeur d’Alene 37, Rocky Mountain 24: The visiting and defending 5A state champion Vikings raced to a 30-13 halftime lead and had no difficulty putting away the Grizzlies. Carlos Martinez ran for touchdowns of 81 and 18 yards in the first quarter for the Vikings and Chad Chalich threw for two touchdowns on 28-of-34 passing and 384 yards.

Post Falls 29, Lewiston 14: Senior running back Tyson Johnson broke off a 53-yard TD on his first run as the Trojans cruised past the visiting Bengals in a nonleague season opener. Sophomore Joey Pfennings had two TD passes to Seth Anderson as Post Falls opened a 29-8 lead in the second half.

Grangeville 48, Bonners Ferry 0: Justin Robie ran for five touchdowns in the Bulldogs win at Potlatch.

North Star League

Wallace 54, Kootenai 14: Quarterback Casey McKinnon, a transfer from Mullan, completed all eight of his passes for 258 yards and receiver Tyler Beard caught four for 94 yards in the Miners’ victory at Harrison.

Lakeside (ID) 50, Clark Fork 0: Jeremy Stivers scored TDs runs of 55 and 6 yards to lead the visiting Knights to a win in a game shortened because of the mercy rule.
