Area Roundup: Gonzaga women capture soccer title

Sarah Rhodes scored her third goal of the weekend to give the Gonzaga women’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Boise State and the Bronco Invite title Sunday in Boise.

Goalkeeper Susan Brown made two saves and recorded her first shutout with the Bulldogs (2-2-0).

Rhodes, who scored in the sixth minute off an assist from Katey Pennington, now has 15 career goals, moving her into fifth place on Gonzaga’s all-time list.

The Bulldogs open their home schedule Friday at 4 p.m. against Weber State.

• Freshman Cassie Black scored twice in the first six minutes of the game to give Eastern Washington a 2-0 lead, but Air Force stormed back for a 3-2 victory at the Boise Invite.

Jamie Walker and Natalie Schwery split time in goal for the Eagles (0-4-0), with Walker making two saves in the first half and Schwery making seven in the second.

Eastern hosts Wyoming on Sunday in its home opener.

• Brandi Vega’s goal in the 17th minute gave Washington State a 1-0 victory over Seattle University in Pullman.

The win for the Cougars (2-1-0) was witnessed by 1,273 fans, setting a WSU record for single-match home attendance.

The Cougars conclude their homestand Friday against Wyoming at 3 p.m. and Sunday against Weber State at 11 a.m.

• Chelsea Small scored her 23rd career goal, one shy of the Idaho career record, in the Vandals’ 2-1 loss to host Portland State.

Small’s goal in the 34th minute tied the game at 1-all, but the Vikings scored the winner less than four minutes later. The goal also gave Small 54 career points, tied for second on the Vandals’ all-time list.

Marissa Fehrman made six saves in her first career start in goal for Idaho (0-2-2).

Idaho hosts the Governor’s Cup on Friday and Sunday.

Volleyball

The Idaho Vandals lost to Eastern Michigan in the finale of the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind. The 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 defeat dropped Idaho to 1-2 on the season.

Alicia Milo and Allison Walker each posted double-doubles for the Vandals, with Milo recording 14 kills and 19 digs, both team highs, and Walker finishing with 10 kills and 14 digs.

Idaho plays in the Kansas State Invitational on Manhattan, Kan., on Friday and Saturday. The event features BYU and Georgia Southern in addition to the Vandals and host Wildcats.

Golf

Rob Seibly shot a final-round 69 for a three-day total of 206 to win the Spokane City Championship at The Creek at Qualchan. John Molitor won the senior title, firing a final-round 79 for a total of 222.
