Wynne leads CCS to men’s basketball victory

Preston Wynne led four players in double figures with 22 points as the Community Colleges of Spokane men’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Dale J. Bates Invitational in Eugene, Ore., with a 90-75 win over Umpqua on Friday.

DeAngelo Jones had 17 points, Brady Bagby had 16 and Nate Frisbie added 14 points and 11 rebounds for CCS (7-0).

Coleton Baker led the Riverhawks (3-1) with 23 points.

The Sasquatch play today against Redwoods.

• The North Idaho Cardinals jumped out to an early lead and raced past Walla Walla (4-2) 78-51 at the Big Bend Classic at Moses Lake.

Six Cardinals (11-1) players scored 10 points or more. Kaj Sherman and Antoine Hosley led the way with 14 points apiece.

Women’s basketball

Lexi Belcher had 16 of her 18 points in the second half as Whitworth (3-6) edged UC Santa Cruz (3-6) 70-65 at the Kim Evanger Raney Classic at the Sherwood Center in Walla Walla.

Kendra Lahue and Kayla Johnson added 12 points each for the Pirates, who will play Lancaster Bible College tonight.

• Community Colleges of Spokane saw its nine-point halftime-lead evaporate as Quest (12-4) came back to beat the Sasquatch in a nonconference game at Moses Lake.

Amanda Buttrey had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the Sasquatch (2-5).

• Julia Salmio had 19 points and Korina Baker added 18 as North Idaho beat host Walla Walla (5-2).

Angela Woods added 11 points and five rebounds for NIC (7-2).

• Regina Rogers scored 19 of her 26 points in the second half to lead Washington (6-2) to a 61-49 nonconference win over Portland (5-5) in Seattle.

Rogers made 7 of 9 shots in the second half after missing five shots in the first half. She also had a game-high nine rebounds.

Wrestling

Mike Carreon (133 pounds), Jarrett Morrill (141), Ryan Zumwalt (157), Justin Korthuis (184) and Caleb Rivera (197) all won as North Idaho edged Northwest College in Coeur d’Alene.

Junior hockey

Beaver Valley scored three first-period goals and beat the Spokane Braves 5-1 in a NJCAA game in Fruitvale, British Columbia.

Matt Thurston scored Spokane’s lone goal.

Women’s soccer

Washington State junior Brandi Vega and freshman Nicole Setterlund were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Pacific Region Second Team.

Idaho junior Chelsea Small was selected to the third team.

Football

The Spokane Shock place defensive back Jameel Dowling on the Other League Exempt List. Dowling signed with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League.
