Forsberg forced to retire again

Hockey: Typically stoic Peter Forsberg was quite emotional as he announced he was stepping away from hockey because of a bothersome right foot that left him vulnerable on the ice.

Flanked by his fiancee, Forsberg choked up several times Monday as he pulled the plug on his latest comeback attempt after playing in just two games with the Colorado Avalanche.

He acknowledged he’s through with the game, saying he “can’t do it anymore.” He leaves with no regrets, despite feeling “like a little kid that had candy stolen from.”

The former NHL MVP has been plagued by a chronic foot ailment since 2003.

Ex-Cougar tailback faces misdemeanor

College football: Former Washington State starting running back James Montgomery was arrested early Saturday morning by Pullman police and charged with possession of marijuana, less than 40 grams.

Montgomery, who has exhausted his eligibility with the Cougars but was considering petitioning the NCAA for a possible sixth season, rushed for a team-high 478 yards and five touchdowns last season. The transfer from California missed most of the 2009 season due to a catastrophic calf injury that nearly cost the Rancho Cordova, Calif., native his leg.

Montgomery, 23, was the passenger in a car stopped for DUI at 3 a.m., according to Pullman police spokesman Cmdr. Chris Tennant, and is alleged to have tried to hide a small amount of marijuana. The misdemeanor possession charge carries a mandatory minimum of one day in jail and a fine that usually ranges between $250 and $500.

Weitzes shine at UW Open

Track: The UW Open, the Sunday follow to Saturday’s Husky Classic indoor meet, provided a chance for a pair of Spokane runners to shine.

Kendra and Nathan Weitz of Shadle Park posted Top 20 national times in the mile running against collegians.

Kendra, a sophomore, won her event with a personal record of 4-minutes, 59.88-seconds.

Nathan, a junior, was second overall to a Canadian collegian, with a PR of 4:14.64.

On the most recent national list, Nathan would be fourth and Kendra 17th for the mile.
