Area roundup: NIC women clobber Chandler-Gilbert
Kama Griffiths finished with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, Tugce Canitez added 18 points and eight rebounds and North Idaho (13-2) pounded Chandler-Gilbert CC (0-13) 99-37 in nonconference women’s basketball Tuesday in Chandler, Ariz.
The Cardinals held CGCC to 15-of-61 shooting in the game, taking a 57-10 lead at halftime. CGCC was led by 13 points from Rahnae Spooner, who shot just 5 of 21 from the floor.
NIC shot 50 percent from the 3-point line, led by Griffiths and Reynolds, who combined to go 6 of 8.
Hockey
Chris Derochie scored the winning goal in overtime to lift the Beaver Valley Nitehawks (25-11-0-3) to a 3-2 victory over the Spokane Braves (16-20-0-2) in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action in Fruitvale, B.C.
The win moved the Nitehawks three points behind Castlegar for first place in the Nei Murdoch Division of the Kootenay Conference. Nick Redding and Uriah Machuga scored goals for the Braves.
• Spokane Chiefs forward Tyler Johnson was named HUSKY Western Hockey League player of the month for December, the league announced.
Johnson led all scorers with 22 points, helping the Chiefs finish 9-1-1 in December. He sits second among WHL scorers with 58 total points in 36 games. He has a team-high 27 goals and also has 31 assists.
