Religion Notebook: Traditional Jewish music to be featured

Congregation Emanu-El will celebrate klezmer Shabbat on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive.

Local klezmer band, the Kosher Red Hots will perform.

Klezmer is traditional Jewish music characterized by expressive melodies, complete with laughing and weeping.

Community dinner

The Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive, will host a community dinner focused on “Ethical Eating”, Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.

The dinner, a fundraiser for PEACH (People for Environmental Action and Community Health) and One World Spokane, will discuss suggestions for what you can do to simplify your own ethical eating and make it affordable.

Tickets are available at the door for $15 each or $40 per family.

Celtic service

St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St., will present its next Celtic celebration today at 7 p.m.

This service, “Breath and Spirit,” will focus on personal spirituality and will include a Christian service of Communion, sung chants, Celtic prayers and music.

A potluck reception will follow the service.

Seeking volunteers

Catholic Charities Spokane, 12 E. Fifth Ave., will host a volunteer open house Tuesday from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m.

The event will discuss volunteer opportunities in its many programs: Bernadette Place, Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Catholic Relief Services, Childbirth and Parenting Alone Program, the Christmas Bureau, counseling, the House of Charity, the Parish Social Ministry, Refugee and Immigration Services, the regional offices, Respect Life, St. Anne’s Children and Family Center, St. Margaret’s Shelter, senior and family housing and senior services.

Tours of Catholic Charities will also be available.
