Odor’s HR in 16th inning lifts Spokane Indians

YAKIMA – Rougned Odor’s one-out, two-run homer in the 16th inning Wednesday night sparked the Spokane Indians a 9-5 win over the Yakima Bears in Northwest League baseball play at Yakima County Stadium. Spokane (5-1) won its fifth consecutive game and handed Yakima (1-5) its fourth straight loss. The five-hour game opened a three-game series and started a six-game road swing for the Indians. The game ended at 12:05 Thursday morning. The Indians took a 5-2 lead in the sixth on Edwin Garcia’s two-out, two-run single to left. The hit scored Zachary Cone, who had reached on an error, and Ruben Sierra, who had singled. Garcia was thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a double. Yakima got a run back in its sixth on Jimmy Comerota’s RBI grounder to score Garrett Weber, who had singled and moved to third on Marc Bourgeois’ double. Spokane reliever Andres Perez-Lobo worked a perfect seventh, but the Bears went to work on his replacement, Francisco Mendoza, in the eighth. Leadoff hitter Daniel Pulfer singled to right, moved up on a walk to Weber, and scored on Tyler Bream’s single to right. Mendoza loaded the bases by walking Bourgeois, then gave way to Matthew West. The Bears tied the game at 5 on Comerota’s grounder that forced out Bourgeois at second, but West struck out the next two batters to escape further damage. Yakima nearly won in the 12th after Weber doubled to lead off and moved to third on a sacrifice. Bourgeois flew out to left and Sierra threw home to double up Weber. The Indians had runners on second and third with one out in the 14th but didn’t score. Yakima stranded a runner at third in the 15th when Juan Grullon struck out Justin Hilt. Grullon pitched three innings for the win. Sierra set a league record by striking out seven times. Hilt struck out six times.
