Area roundup: Golden Gophers blank Cougs at tourney

Phil Isakkson (1-0) fired 6 1/3 shutout innings, allowing five hits and three walks, and the Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-4) earned a 2-0 win Saturday over the Washington State Cougars (5-2) in the Dairy Queen Baseball Classic at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.

The Cougars, who had their four-game winning streak come to an end, had at least one baserunner in every inning but couldn’t get the key hits.

James Wise (2-1) took the loss for the Cougars. He retired the first 10 batters he faced before the Gophers pushed across single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Wise allowed six hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings of work. He struck out five and walked three.

• Tyler Chism belted a leadoff home run in the top of the eighth inning and the Gonzaga Bulldogs (3-5) rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Pacific Tigers (2-6) in nonconference action in Stockton, Calif.

Chism’s first homer of the season capped a 3-for-3 day that saw him score two runs.

Reliever Andy Hunter (1-1), who allowed a run in 1 2/3 innings, earned the win. Cody Martin pitched a perfect final two innings to pick up his second save.

Billy Moon’s two-out two-run double in the top of the fifth highlighted a three-run inning that erased a 3-1 deficit for the Bulldogs.

• The Whitworth Pirates (5-5) and College of Idaho split a pair of nonconference games in Caldwell, Idaho, with the Pirates winning the opener 12-9 before falling 4-0 in the nightcap.

Kevin Valerio had four hits and drove in a pair of runs and Tyler Pfeffer had a double and three RBIs to propel the Whits to the first-game victory.

Levi Mitchum allowed six hits in notching the complete-game shutout for Coyotes in the nightcap.

• The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (2-1) and Clackamas Cougars (1-2) split a nonconference doubleheader at Spokane Falls CC.

The Cougars scored twice in the first inning of the opener and held on for a 4-1 win. The Sasquatch used a 10-run sixth inning to coast to a 14-6 win in the second game.

Softball

Heather Hesselgesser homered to lead off the 10th inning and Jill Pecka added a two-run double to lead the Whitworth Pirates (4-10, 2-4) to a 12-9 win and a Northwest Conference doubleheader sweep over the Puget Sound Loggers in Tacoma.

Emily Anderson pitched a complete game and Kimmi Kumangai drove in a pair of runs as the Whits won the nightcap, 6-4.

Track and field

Washington State Cougars’ Anna Layman broke a 19-year-old school record at the Iowa State Qualifier Indoor meet in Ames.

Layman ran the women’s 800 in 2 minutes, 5.93 seconds to better Jennifer Carpenter’s record of 2:06.62 set in 1992.

• Whitworth’s Carter Comito didn’t wait long to get an NCAA Division III outdoor automatic qualifying throw for May’s championship meet.

Comito threw the discus 176 feet, 4 inches in winning the event at the Willamette Opener.
