Pirates’ season comes to end in five-set loss

The Whitworth volleyball team saw its season come to an abrupt end Friday night in Thousand Oaks, Calif., with a five-set loss to Cal Lutheran (27-6) in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Game scores were 18-25, 25-22, 16-25, 25-17, 15-8.

Amanda Grumbach had 17 kills and 21 digs, Kaimi Rocha had 16 kills and 19 digs and Bree Riddle handed out 48 assists to lead the Pirates.

The Northwest Conference champions ended the season at 19-7.

• Washington State gave a competitive effort but still fell in straight sets to fifth-ranked California (24-4, 14-4) in a Pac-12 Conference match in Pullman. Game scores were 26-24, 25-20, 25-22.

Meagan Ganzer had a match-high 19 kills and Camryn Iwin added 33 assists and seven digs to lead the Cougars.

Washington State (12-15, 4-13) hosts Stanford on Sunday.

• Krista Vansant had 18 kills and Jenna Orlandini had 29 digs as Washington rallied to beat No. 3 Stanford (19-5, 13-5) 25-18, 25-27, 19-25, 25-22, 15-10 in a Pac-12 Conference match in Seattle.

Gabbi Parker added 16 kills for UW (19-6, 11-6).

Men’s soccer

Erik Hurtado scored in the 56th minute, giving Santa Clara (10-5-4, 6-4-1) a 1-0 West Coast Conference win over Gonzaga in Spokane.

The Broncos held a 10-8 advantage in shots.Ryan Caballero made four saves for GU (4-12-2, 2-8-2).

The Bulldogs wrap up their season Sunday at home against San Francisco.

• Jacob Hustedt, Casey McCool and Quinton Beasley all scored as Washington (12-4-2, 7-3) beat Oregon State (5-11-2, 3-6-1) 3-0 in a Pac-12 Conference regular-season finale in Seattle.

Beasley and Hustedt scored in the first half and McCool added an insurance goal in the second half.

The NCAA tournament begins Thursday. The Huskies will find out Monday if they were selected for the tournament.

Women’s basketball

After an impressive start to the game, Washington State fell apart in the second half and lost 72-60 to Penn State (1-0) at the Lady Lion Classic in University Park, Pa.

The Cougars scored 38 first-half points and led by three at the half, but were outscored 37-22 in the second half.

Sage Romberg scored 12 points and Rosie Tarnowski added 10 for WSU (0-1).

The Cougars play their second game of the tournament on Sunday.

• Four players scored 12 points as Eastern Washington routed Corban 89-54 in a season opener at Reese Court in Cheney.

Brianne Ryan, Carrie Ojeda, Chenise Pakootas and Laura Hughes all scored 12 points for the Eagles (1-0).

EWU will look for its second win at home against Hofstra on Sunday.

• Kalasia Green scored 19 points and Mesa College erased a seven-point halftime deficit and edged North Idaho 55-54 at the College of Southern Idaho tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Angela Woods and Julia Salmio each scored 16 points for the Cardinals, who were outscored 28-20 in the second half after leading 34-27 at halftime.

North Idaho plays Gillette College today.

• Blair Shinoda made a contested jumper with 7.7 seconds left, giving UC Davis a 69-68 win over Washington in both teams’ season opener in Seattle.

Regina Rogers had 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Huskies (2-1), who host Seattle University on Wednesday.

Men’s basketball

Antoine Hosley led five players in double figures with 16 points as North Idaho routed La Jolla Prep 83-59 at the College of Southern Idaho tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Michael Middlebrooks, Edrico McGregor and Keon Lewis all scored 12 points and Jordan McCloud added 11 for the Cardinals. NIC plays Phoenix College today.

Junior hockey

Spokane held off a late rally by Summerland (7-14) and beat the Steam 6-5 in a KIJHL match at Summerland, B.C.

Matt Thurston scored twice and Brycen Fisher had three assists for the Braves (7-13). Summerland scored the final four goals of the game.

Wrestling

North Idaho won six of the 10 matches and edged Southwestern Oregon Community College 21-15 in Coos Bay, Ore.

Joaquin Calderon (125 pounds), Jarrett Morrill (141), Bryce McMahon (149), Ryan Zumwalt (157), Kyle Sweedman (174) and Matthew Foxworthy (285) all won for the Cardinals.
