Post Falls senior Colbert heads to Montana St.

Coeur d’Alene boys basketball coach Kent Leiss was watching a recent scrimmage at North Idaho College. One of the players on the floor was Post Falls senior Marcus Colbert.

“I think he was the best player out there,” Leiss said.

So it’s no wonder to Leiss that Colbert, a point guard, has accepted a scholarship offer to Montana State University.

“It was a lot more than I expected over there,” said Colbert, who visited Bozeman two weekends ago. “I liked Bozeman quite a bit. As soon as I got there, me and the players started joking around and getting along right away. Coach (Brad) Huse really wants to win and I want to be in a program where the main purpose is to win.”

The 5-foot-10 Colbert, who will start for a fourth season this winter, averaged 16 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.9 assists last year. He was named to the 5A All-Idaho first team for a second straight year. As a sophomore he helped the Trojans win a state championship.

Colbert will join former Post Falls teammate Shawn Reid at MSU.

Another four-year starter to be, Ty Egbert of Lake Roosevelt, has given Idaho an oral commitment.

The 6-8 Egbert led the Raiders to fourth at the State 2B tourney last year.

“Idaho is a great school,” Egbert said. “I love their coaching staff and their players. It really feels like home.”

Numbers dwindling

Bodies are becoming scarce in North Star League 1A Division II eight-man football these days – at least at Mullan and Clark Fork.

Mullan is down to about eight healthy bodies and that’s largely why it forfeited an earlier game against Wallace and will do so again and one against Lakeside. Both Wallace and Lakeside are 1A Division I schools with about five times Mullan’s enrollment.

“We have 10 players but one is ineligible,” Mullan first-year coach Stetson Spooner said. “We’re essentially playing with eight. I appreciate the administration looking out for the kids. You can finish a game with seven but you have to start with eight.”

Last Friday, Mullan and Clark Fork literally played an 8-man game – both teams had just eight players.

Clark Fork has been decimated by injuries this season.

The other 1A Division II team, Kootenai, has two times the players that Clark Fork and Mullan have with 17.

Goodwin update

Ferris senior quarterback Ben Goodwin reports that his mother, Mary, keeps improving every day after having a double lung transplant last month.

Mary Goodwin will continue rehabilitation in Seattle until about Christmas before returning home.

Ben expressed his thanks to everyone who has been praying for his mom.
