Gonzaga swamps WSU in baseball

Andy Hunter had four hits, including a tying home run, as Gonzaga beat Washington State 9-3 in nonconference baseball Tuesday in Spokane.

The Cougars (13-12) scored their runs in the first inning before the Bulldogs (19-7) chipped away.

Kenny Smith (1-0) won in relief of starter Derek Callahan for the Bulldogs, allowing four hits over 6 2/3 shutout innings. He struck out six and walked none.

WSU starter Kyle Swannack (2-3) took the loss. He allowed four runs – all earned – on 10 hits over three innings.

• Lewis-Clark State scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth and scored on a bases-loaded walk in the 13th inning for a 9-8 nonconference victory over Whitworth University at Lewiston.

The Warriors won despite five errors that led to three unearned runs for the Pirates (14-10-1).

• Community Colleges of Spokane swept a doubleheader with Big Bend Community College, winning 1-0 and 9-7 at Spokane Falls. D.J. Smith pitched a complete-game shutout to win Game 1 for the Sasquatch.

Golf

Idaho’s Jarred Bossio tied for third place at the Jim West Intercollegiate in San Marcos, Texas.

Bossio finished at 6-under-par 210, three strokes behind medalist Mitchell McLeroy of Stephen F. Austin State.

Idaho finished fifth as a team at 2-over 866, 15 strokes back of champion Sam Houston State.

Stefan Richardson was the only other Vandal to finish in the top 20, shooting a 2-over 218 and tying for 18th.

• Idaho senior Kayla Mortellaro was named Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week for March 26-April 1. She has been named WAC golfer of the week or month 14 times in her career.
