Peguero makes his case with Mariners

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Carlos Peguero thought he was going to begin the season at Triple-A Tacoma. Now he’s trying to make the most of a second chance to help the Seattle Mariners.

Peguero had four hits, including a two-run homer, in the Mariners’ 9-8 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.

“A nice day for him. He’s definitely starting to figure it out,” Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. “Overall, he has had a nice spring.”

Peguero collected his fifth spring homer and three singles. He was sent to the minors last week, but he was recalled when Mike Carp went on the 15-day disabled list and now is a part of a crowded outfield picture.

Munenori Kawasaki, Kyle Seager and Casper Wells had two hits apiece for the Mariners, who committed five errors, including two on one play.

Jonathan Herrera had three RBIs for the Rockies, who scored four times in the sixth inning to take the lead. Relievers Rafael Betancourt, Matt Belisle and Rex Brothers combined for three innings of one-hit ball.

Seattle optioned reliever Shawn Kelley to the minors, reducing its roster to 27.
