Idaho advances to semifinals of WAC women’s tennis

Idaho swept to a 5-0 victory over Utah State on the first day of the Western Athletic Conference women’s tennis tournament Thursday in Las Cruces, N.M.

The Vandals’ No. 2 and 3 doubles teams of Molly Knox-Sophie Vickers and Alejandra Lozano-Beatriz Flores won their matches 8-3. Knox followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 3 singles and Alejandra Lozano won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5. Victoria Lozano clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 1.

The other matches were not completed once the Vandals clinched the victory.

The victory was the first in WAC tournament play since 2007 for the third-seeded Vandals, who advance to the semifinals. They will play the winner of this morning’s suspended match between Hawaii and Nevada.

• Washington State singles players Ksenia Googe and Elisabeth Fournier lost their first-round championship flight matches at the Pac-12 tournament in Ojai, Calif. Doubles play begins today.
