Nine people hurt in five-vehicle crash

EAST WENATCHEE – Nine people were injured in a five-vehicle accident about 3:30 p.m. Saturday on state Route 28 about three miles east of East Wenatchee.

Four of the vehicles were motorcycles, according to a Washington State Patrol report. The fifth vehicle, a station wagon, was driven by Mareo L. Apigo, 36, of Moses Lake.

The four motorcycles were eastbound on the highway when a vehicle, whose driver was not identified, slowed to make a left turn into a private driveway. To avoid hitting that car, the motorcylists laid their bikes down on the highway.

One of the motorcycles struck the Apigo vehicle, which was westbound on the highway, according to the report. That motorcycle was driven by Bobby Lee Byrd, 36, of Kennewick.

The other motorcycles were driven by Thomas R. Jagger, 26, of Richland; James G. Ryon, 60, of Liberty Lake; and George M. Campbell, 62, of Spokane. All four motorcyclists were transported to Central Washington Hospital. Their conditions were not available.

Passengers on the motorcycles were also injured and were treated at Central Washington Hospital. They were Karen L. Byrd, 42, of West Richland; Susan M. Denkhaus, 68, of Newman Lake; and Shaun E. Campbell, 56, of Spokane.

Injured but not transported to the hospital were station wagon passengers Alea D. Apigo, 33, and Carlos G. Hernandez, 15, both of Moses Lake.
