Zags’ Gonzales preseason baseball All-American
College baseball: Gonzaga University junior pitcher/first baseman Marco Gonzales was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association 2013 Preseason All-American team Thursday. Gonzales, the reigning West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, was one of the 18 players chosen the preseason first team.
Gonzales, a Fort Collins, Colo., native, went 8-2 with a 1.55 ERA on the mound and hit .325.
Gonzales, one of three finalists for The 2012 College Baseball Hall of Fame’s John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, appeared in 12 games for the Zags with three shutouts to go with 92 strikeouts. He led the WCC in ERA.
Brewers sign Lewis and Clark graduate Webb
Baseball: The Milwaukee Brewers signed Lewis and Clark High School graduate Travis Webb and invited him spring training.
The Brewers have an opening for a left-hander in their bullpen.
Webb, 28, was drafted by Cincinnati in 2006 and spent his entire career in the Reds’ organization.
Webb, went 2-6 with a 4.81 ERA in 54 games, including one start, for Triple-A Louisville last season. He became a free agent in November.
A Spokane native, Webb played college baseball first at Arizona State for one season before transferring to Washington State and playing for the Cougars for two years.
