In brief: Spartans deal Buckeyes rare loss at home

College Basketball: Adreian Payne scored 15 points, Draymond Green added 12 and defense-minded No. 11 Michigan State beat No. 3 Ohio State 58-48 Saturday night, ending the Buckeyes’ 39-game home winning streak in Columbus, Ohio.

The Spartans (20-5, 9-3) pulled into a tie with the Buckeyes (21-4, 9-3) for first place in the Big Ten.

Keith Appling had 14 points for Michigan State, which rode its smothering pressure to a 10-point halftime lead and never relented.

Jared Sullinger had 17 points and 16 rebounds for Ohio State.

• Kentucky edges Vandy: Doron Lamb hit a 3-pointer with 3:18 left to put No. 1 Kentucky ahead to stay, and the Wildcats (25-1, 11-0) took a big step toward a Southeastern Conference regular-season title by posting a 69-63 win over Vanderbilt (17-8, 6-4) in Nashville, Tenn., for their 17th straight win.

Lamb scored 16 and Anthony Davis added 15 points and seven blocks.

• Missouri drops Baylor: Phil Pressey scored 19 points, making four of No. 4 Missouri’s season-best 14 3-pointers, and the Tigers (23-2, 10-2 Big 12) earned a 72-57 win over No. 6 Baylor (21-4, 8-4) in Columbia, Mo.

Sixth man Michael Dixon also had four 3-pointers and Marcus Denmon added three for Missouri, which shot 50 percent from long range.

• Tennessee upsets No. 8 Florida: Trae Golden scored 17 points, Jeronne Maymon added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Tennessee (13-12, 5-5 SEC) held on for a 75-70 upset win over No. 8 Florida (19-6, 7-3) at Gainesville, Fla., ending the Gators’ home-winning streak at 19.

Lin rallies Knicks past Timberwolves

NBA: Jeremy Lin hit a free throw with 4.9 seconds left and lift the New York Knicks to their fifth straight victory, 100-98, over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis.

Steve Novak scored 15 points, including the game-tying 3-pointer with 36 seconds to play and Lin used his quickness to draw a foul and get to the line in the closing seconds. Lin finished with 20 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

• Nowitzki, Terry lead Mavs over Blazers: Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 points, Jason Terry added 19, and the Dallas Mavericks held on for a 97-94 double-overtime victory over the visiting Portland Trail Blazers.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 33 points and Jamal Crawford scored 19 for the Trail Blazers.

• Nuggets upend Pacers: Ty Lawson scored 27 points to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 113-109 win over the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis.

Danny Granger scored 26 points for the Pacers, who have lost four of five.

Predators fall to Bruins in shootout

NHL: Tyler Seguin and Patrice Bergeron scored shootout goals to lift the Boston Bruins to a 4-3 win over the visiting Nashville Predators.

Boston forced overtime when Milan Lucic scored a power-play goal with 67 seconds left in regulation after goalie Tim Thomas was pulled for an extra skater.

• Callahan’s hat trick leads Rangers over Flyer: Ryan Callahan scored three goals, helping the visiting New York Rangers continue their dominance over Philadelphia with a 5-2 victory.

Claude Giroux and Wayne Simmonds had Philadelphia’s goals.

• Malkin stays hot as Penguins rip Jets: Evgeni Malkin added to his NHL-leading point total, scoring a goal and dishing out four assists as the Pittsburgh Penguins rolled past the visiting Winnipeg Jets 8-5.

James Neal, Chris Kunitz and Dustin Jeffery also scored for the Penguins, who erased an early 2-0 deficit and won their fifth straight home game.

Wi maintains the lead as Tiger charges

Golf: In Pebble Beach, Calif., Charlie Wi played bogey-free at Spyglass Hill for a 3-under 69 to build a three-shot lead in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Now it’s time for him to face his demons of self-doubt – along with a familiar force in golf.

Tiger Woods took another step toward showing his game is nearly back.

He ran off five birdies in a six-hole stretch early in his round at Pebble Beach and had a 5-under 67 that put him four shots behind.

• Pavin, Senior tied for lead at Allianz: Corey Pavin and Peter Senior – both winless on the Champions Tour – shared the lead after the second round of the Allianz Championship at Broken Sound Golf Club in Boca Raton, Fla.

Pavin followed his opening 8-under 64 with a 70 to match Senior at 10 under. Senior had a 68.

• Korda leads Women’s Australian Open: American teenager Jessica Korda moved into position for a two-sport, father-daughter Australian double, shooting an even-par 73 in windy conditions to take the Women’s Australian Open lead at Royal Melbourne in Melbourne.

Korda, the 18-year-old daughter of 1998 Australian Open tennis champion Petr Korda, had a 4-under 215 total in the LPGA Tour opener on the historic club’s difficult Composite Course, the 2011 Presidents Cup venue that is hosting a women’s professional event for the first time.

U.S. knocks out Swiss in Davis Cup

Miscellany: In Fribourg, Switzerland, the United States swept favored Switzerland out of the Davis Cup when Mardy Fish and Mike Bryan beat Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

Teaming for only the second time, Fish and Bryan comfortably handled the 2008 Olympic doubles champions in front of an occasionally hostile Swiss crowd of 7,000.

• Schild wins sixth slalom: In Soldeu-Grandvalira, Andorra, Marlies Schild of Austria won her sixth World Cup slalom of the season after overall leader Lindsey Vonn and defending champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch crashed out in the opening run on the windy Pyrenees course.

Schild blazed through the 59 gates to clock a best time of 1 minute, 39.44 seconds.

• Feuz wins on Sochi course: In Krasnaya Polyana, Russia, emerging Swiss standout Beat Feuz celebrated his 25th birthday in style by winning the inaugural World Cup downhill on the course for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

American Bode Miller was fastest midway down but then made a big mistake and finished fourth, missing the podium by just 0.02 seconds.

• Trainer Pletcher wins 3,000th career race: Todd Pletcher saddled his 3,000th career winner at Gulfstream Park, when Spring Hill Farm won the third race in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

• Davis, White take ice dancing lead: U.S. Champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White took a step toward defending their Four Continents Figure Skating Championships ice dance title by winning the short dance in Colorado Springs, Colo.
