Pregnant Olympic shooter Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi didn’t win a medal, but she still will have quite a story to tell her daughter someday about their experience together at the London Games.
The Malaysian finished 34th out of 56 shooters in the women’s 10-meter air rifle on Saturday – all the more remarkable considering that the baby was kicking “three or four times” during the 75-minute qualifying round in which she was firing at a bulls-eye the size of a coin from 10 meters away.
“It didn’t put me off. I told her, ‘Behave yourself, be a good girl, be calm, and don’t move so much,’ ” Mohd Taibi said.
Did she listen?
“Yep, she always listens to me,” the 29-year-old mother-to-be said.
Bookie refunds flame bets
The perfectly kept secret about who would light the Olympic cauldron caught even Britain’s savvy bookmakers by surprise.
So much so, that a leading oddsmaker is refunding all wagers because it was too tough for gamblers to guess the identity of the seven young athletes who had the honor Friday.
Uncle Bill should be proud
Warren Buffett and Bill Gates will be thrilled when they get the news: 16-year-old American Ariel Hsing is into the second round in Olympic table tennis.
With none of the top 16 players and favored Chinese entering competition until the third round, Hsing made the most of her first Olympic appearance by winning.
Buffett met Hsing when she was only 9, and two years later invited her to play against shareholders at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meeting. She returned earlier this year and took a few points off Buffett and Gates.
“I know Uncle Bill is going to come to London to watch,” said Hsing, who also calls Buffett “Uncle Warren.”
Takes a lot of gold
Day 1 in Olympic Park and already visitors were feeling it in their wallets. The one-eyed Olympic mascots Wenlock and Mandeville were going for 15 pounds ($23) a pop, while the hometown “Team GB” backpacks ran 37 pounds ($57).
