Take taxpayer test

In Thomas Hanley’s May 22 efforts (“Real question about student loans”) to trivialize the matter of student loans by stating that taxpayers don’t owe students anything, it is interesting to see that he did not state if his reasoning would apply to himself.

I wonder if Hanley would be willing to take his own advice? Here is a little test. Would Hanley go two weeks without anything that depends on taxes? Here are a few hints to get him started. He cannot drive on the roads. He cannot go to the public library. He cannot ride public transportation. If he is on Medicare, he cannot go to the doctor. If he collects Social Security, he will have to tear up his checks. If he has children in public schools, they will have to stay home. If his residence should, unfortunately, need the fire department, he will need that garden hose.

Remember, the taxpayers don’t owe him anything.
