North Carolina wins rematch versus Duke

College Basketball: Kendall Marshall had 20 points and 10 assists, and No. 6 North Carolina beat No. 4 Duke 88-70 on Saturday night to win the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season men’s basketball title in Durham, N.C.

Tyler Zeller had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Harrison Barnes added 16 points for the Tar Heels (27-4, 14-2). North Carolina shot 54.5 percent, built a 45-28 rebounding advantage and sent Duke to its deepest halftime deficit at Cameron Indoor Stadium – 24 points.

Mason Plumlee had 17 points, Miles Plumlee added 16 points and 11 rebounds and freshman Austin Rivers had 15 points for the Blue Devils (26-5, 13-3).

• Calhoun returns as UConn beats Pitt: Jim Calhoun returned to the bench after more than a month of medical leave and coached Connecticut to a 74-65 win over Pittsburgh in Storrs, Conn.

Shabazz Napier scored 23 points, including a big 3-pointer with a minute left, and Roscoe Smith added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies (18-12, 8-10 Big East), who kept alive hopes for an at-large bid to defend their NCAA national championship.

J.J. Moore led Pittsburgh (16-15, 5-13) with 16 points.

• Syracuse beats Louisville: Brandon Triche scored 18 points, Kris Joseph added 11 in the final home game of his career, and second-ranked Syracuse beat visiting No. 19 Louisville 58-49 at Syracuse, N.Y.

Syracuse (30-1, 17-1) matched the Big East record for victories – Connecticut also won 17 conference games in 1995-96 – and the Orange also finished the regular season with 30 wins for the first time in coach Jim Boeheim’s 36-year tenure.

• Marquette tops Georgetown: Jae Crowder had 26 points and 14 rebounds in his final home game as a senior, helping No. 8 Marquette (25-6, 14-4) beat No. 11 Georgetown (22-7, 12-6) 83-69 in Milwaukee, and clinch the No. 2 seed in the Big East tournament.

• Iowa State knocks off No. 9 Baylor: Scott Christopherson had 23 points in his final home game and Iowa State (22-9, 12-6 Big 12) rallied to beat No. 9 Baylor (25-6, 12-6) 80-72 in Ames, Iowa.

• Griner leads Bears to win: Brittney Griner scored a career-high 41 points, and pulled down eight rebounds, and the top-ranked Baylor women (31-0, 18-0 Big 12) completed their first undefeated regular season with a 77-53 win over Iowa State (18-11, 9-9) in Waco, Texas.

Federer tops Murray to win in Dubai

Tennis: Roger Federer edged Andy Murray 7-5, 6-4 to win his fifth Dubai Championships title in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

• Ferrer defends title at Mexican Open: Top-seeded David Ferrer easily defended his title at the Mexican Open, beating fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-1, 6-2 in the final in Acapulco, Mexico.

• Taiwan player reaches Malaysia semifinals: Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei reached the Malaysian Open final by defeating Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.

The second semifinal between Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Petra Martic of Croatia was suspended because of rain.

• Matosevic reaches first ATP final: Little-known Marinko Matosevic of Australia reached his first career ATP final, beating Dudi Sela of Israel 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7) in the semifinals at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships in Delray Beach, Fla.

Smith carries Hawks past Oklahoma City

NBA: Josh Smith scored 13 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter, Jeff Teague added 16 points and the Atlanta Hawks snapped visiting Oklahoma City’s seven-game winning streak with a 97-90 victory over the Thunder.

• Love leads T-Wolves past Blazers: Kevin Love scored a season-high 42 points and added 10 rebounds, and the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Portland Trail Blazers with a 122-110 victory.

Former Giants RB, coach Webster dies

NFL: Alex Webster, the star running back for the New York Giants who later coached the team for four years, has died in Florida. He was 80.

Webster played for New York from 1955-64 and was the head coach from 1969-1973. He is fifth on the franchise list with 4,638 yards rushing and also ran for 39 touchdowns.

Stamkos nets winner for Tampa Bay

NHL: Steven Stamkos scored twice, including a power-play goal 2:41 into overtime, to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, N.C.

• Tavares snaps late tie, lifts Isles over Bruins: John Tavares tipped in Matt Moulson’s shot for the late tiebreaking goal, Evgeni Nabokov stopped 32 shots, and the visiting New York Islanders snapped a five-game, road-losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Boston Bruins.

Klitschko retains heavyweight titles

Boxing: Wladimir Klitschko stopped French challenger Jean-Marc Mormeck in the fourth round of a one-sided fight, with a KO, to retain the WBA and IBF heavyweight titles in Duesseldorf, Germany.

• Ramirez beats former Olympian at nationals: Barista turned boxer Jose Ramirez captured his third straight national title, beating former Olympian Raynell Williams 19-13 in their 132-pound bout in Fort Carson, Colo.

World champ Wieber wins American Cup

Gymnastics: Reigning world champion Jordyn Wieber captured her third straight American Cup, finishing with a score of 61.032 to beat teammate Aly Raisman by two-tenths of a point in New York.

Hansen captures Gotham Stakes

Horse racing: Hansen confirmed his status as a top contender for the Kentucky Derby by winning the $400,000 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct Race Track in New York.

• Ron the Greek wins Santa Anita Handicap: Ron the Greek won the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap at Arcadia, Calif., by 3 1/2 lengths, sending Setsuko to a runner-up finish for the second consecutive year.

McIlroy closes in on No. 1 in the world

Miscellany: Rory McIlroy made two par saves on a windy back nine at PGA National and finished with a birdie from the bunker for a 4-under 66, giving him a two-shot lead in the Honda Classic golf event at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Tiger Woods shot 69 and was nine shots behind.

• Rebensburg wins second straight slalom: Olympic ski champion Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany won her second straight World Cup giant slalom, while overall leader Lindsey Vonn finished second in Ofterschwang, Germany.

• Kroell wins downhill: Klaus Kroell of Austria narrowly won a men’s World Cup downhill skiing event for his second straight victory on the Olympic course in Kvitfjell, Norway.
