‘Best of the Blogs’ recognizes Wilson

Spokane chef Sylvia Wilson has been recognized for her blog, Feasting at Home.

Wilson, owner of Feast Catering Co. and former owner of Mizuna, writes about vulnerability of artichokes, shares stories about learning to appreciate life’s small joys and remembers her Finnish mother, Lea. She shares recipes for grilled artichokes with basil aioli, vegan Meyer lemon Bundt cake and the recipe for her Mother’s cardamom bread, called “pulla.”

The posts are beautifully illustrated with pictures from her home kitchen, including detailed shots to show the steps of the recipes.

The blog and Wilson’s recipe for asparagus and poached egg on toast with warm bacon vinaigrette was recently noticed by a contributor to Fine Cooking, which featured Feasting at Home on the magazine’s website under “Best of the Blogs.” Editors describe “Best of the Blogs” as an inside look at the links Fine Cooking editors are forwarding around the office.

Lentil recipe power

Time to get those entries ready for the annual lentil love fest in Pullman.

The 2012 competition is open for entries and has a $1,000 top prize. As usual, the folks behind the Legendary Lentil Cook-off are looking for creative ways to prepare lentils. Recipes may not have more than 15 ingredients, must contain at least 1/2 cup raw lentils or 1 cup cooked lentils and should make 6 to 8 servings. Recipes will be judged on appearance, flavor aroma and texture.

Entries in the competition must be turned in or postmarked by July 2. The top 50 recipes will be selected for a preliminary cook-off on July 26. The top six recipes selected by judges at the preliminary event will advance to the public tasting during the National Lentil Festival.

The National Lentil Festival will be Aug. 17 and 18 in downtown Pullman. For more information, call the National Lentil Festival at (509) 334-3565 or (800) 365-6948. All of the details are online, too, at www.lentilfest.com. Click on “Join Us” and then “Contest Applications” for official rules and an entry form. Look inside today’s Food section for a winner from last year’s cook-off.
