WSU’s Scott-Ellis wins long jump
Washington State junior Stephan Scott-Ellis won the long jump on the first day of competition Saturday at the Pac-12 Conference Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Scott-Ellis, last year’s conference champion in the triple jump, reached a distance of 25 feet, 9 1/4 inches – a lifetime best.
Joe Bartlett took fifth in the shot put (53-9).
The WSU men are in ninth and the women are in eighth heading into day’s second and final day of competition.
• The Eastern Washington men placed sixth while the women took eighth at the Big Sky Conference Championships in Bozeman.
Shene Davis led the Eagle women with a second-place finish in the triple jump. Davis reached a distance of 40-6 1/4, a school record.
EWU’s Keisa Monterola and Robin Taylor finished first and second, respectively, in the pole vault, both at 13-7 1/4.
The Eagles men had three third-place finishers – Kyle King (5,000), Steven Warner (110 hurdles) and Brad Michael (400).
Baseball
Arizona State 10, Gonzaga 1: Michael Benjamin had four hits and drove in five runs as the Sun Devils (31-17) routed the Bulldogs (29-19) in a nonconference game at Patterson Baseball Complex in Spokane.
Alex Bonczyk had GU’s lone RBI.
Arizona State will be looking for the sweep in today’s series finale. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
Stanford 8, Washington State 3: The 11th-ranked Cardinal (31-14, 13-10 Pac-12) took an early four-run lead and held on to beat the Cougars (24-22, 9-13) in a Pac-12 game in Stanford, Calif.
Derek Jones had WSU’s lone RBI.
Stanford will be looking for the sweep in today’s series finale.
CC Spokane 7-5, Columbia Basin 6-4: The Sasquatch swept an NWAACC doubleheader with the two one-run wins over the visiting Hawks.
Colin Peterson had two hits in the opener and a double in the nightcap.
UCLA 11, Washington 3: Kevin Williams had two hits and drove in three runs as the 11th-ranked Bruins (34-13, 14-9 Pac-12) topped the Huskies (26-20, 11-12) in the middle game of a Pac-12 series at Husky Ballpark in Seattle.
Jacob Lamb had three hits – including a home run – and drove in two runs for Washington.
The Bruins and Huskies conclude the series today.
Men’s tennis
The Community Colleges of Spokane claimed four of the six singles titles and one doubles title en route to a first-place finish at the NWAACC Championships at Spokane Falls CC.
Rylan Herdt (No. 3 singles), Sam Delaney (No. 4), Eric Bemis (No. 5) and Jackson Hanh (No. 6) all won titles for the Sasquatch.
Garrett Mullan and Delaney claimed the title at No. 2 doubles.
Women’s tennis
After a thrilling victory in Friday’s first round, Washington State fell 6-0 to No. 2 Florida at the NCAA Championships at Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla.
The Cougars finished the season by matching school records in overall wins (19) and conference wins (six), along with making it to the second round of the NCAA Championships for only the second time.
On Friday, WSU head coach Lisa Hart was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year and junior Liudmila Vasilieva was named to the All-Pac-12 second team.
• The Community Colleges of Spokane took second place at the NWAACC Conference Championships at Spokane Falls.
CCS’ Dru Sanchez won the title at No. 6 singles and the doubles duo of Sanchez and Bri Bazo won at No. 2 doubles.
Women’s golf
St. George’s graduate Chessey Thomas shot an even-par 72 and placed 14th overall at the NCAA Division I Central Region tournament in Columbus, Ohio.
Thomas held Tennessee to fourth place, which qualified the Lady Volunteers for the NCAA Championships May 22-25 in Nashville, Tenn.
• Idaho senior Kayla Mortellaro shot an even-par 72 during the final round of the NCAA West Regional tournament in Erie, Colo.
She finished in a tie for 16th at 4-over 22 – missing the qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships by one stroke.
Women’s rowing
San Diego narrowly edged Gonzaga for first place at the West Coast Conference Championships at the Sacramento State Aquatics Center on Lake Natoma, Calif.
The Toreros and Bulldogs each finished with 39 points, but San Diego was named the champion by virtue of its win in the varsity-8 race.
Following the event, GU’s Jordan Schroeder was named the WCC Co-Coxswain of the Year, Naomi Medley the Newcomer of the Year and Paula Welly was named the Rower of the Year.
