WSU women’s soccer blanks Washington
Micaela Castain’s 43rd-minute goal gave Washington State a 1-0 win over rival Washington in Pac-12 Conference women’s soccer Friday in Pullman.
Gurveen Clair turned away four shots for the Cougars (12-6-1, 6-4-1). Kari Davidson had four saves for the Huskies (10-7-3, 3-6-2).
It was the ninth shutout at home this season for WSU. The Cougars allowed just two goals all season at home, tied for the fewest in school history.
The match was the regular-season finale for both teams. The NCAA will announce its 64-team field for the Division I Championships on Monday.
• Zahimara Fantauzzi’s unassisted goal in the 59th minute broke a 1-all tie and gave Laramie County a 2-1 win over North Idaho in an NJCAA district semifinal match in Cheyenne, Wyo.
The Cardinals (9-4-2) got on the board early, when Ellie Engel sent in a header in the third minute. The loss ended NIC’s season.
• Dani Russell had a goal and an assist as San Diego (8-11, 4-4) blanked Gonzaga (7-11-1, 1-6-1) 3-0 in a West Coast Conference match in San Diego.
Volleyball
Third-seeded North Idaho beat sixth-seeded Colorado Northwestern and second-seeded Salt Lake at the Region 1 8 tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho, to earn a spot in today’s championship match.
The Cardinals got 1 2 kills each from Yang Yang and Kaitlyn Molloy in their 25-2, 25-1 3, 25-1 5 win over Colorado Northwestern (0-25).
Yang, who earned Scenic West Athletic Conference first-team honors, again led the way in NIC’s 25-23, 23-25, 25-1 8, 26-24 win over Salt Lake (22-7). Yang had 20 kills, 1 5 digs and six blocks. Molloy added 1 8 kills and Brooklynn Bradbury and Allison Meehan dished out 23 assists apiece.
NIC (22-4) will play Southern Idaho (28-1) in the title match today.
• Jaicee Harris had 1 7 kills and nine digs as Washington State (1 2-1 4, 2-1 2) came from behind to beat Utah (1 2-1 4, 3-1 0) in five sets in a Pac-1 2 Conference match in Pullman, 1 0-25, 25-20, 2 1-25, 25-23 and 1 6-1 4.
• Krista Vansant had 1 5 kills and 1 1 digs as No. 8 Washington (1 8-4, 9-4) beat Colorado (1 4-1 2, 4-1 0) 25-1 9, 25-1 5, 25-1 5 in a Pac-1 2 play in Seattle.
• Whitworth (9-1 3, 5-1 0) fell 3-2 to Pacific in a Northwest Conference match in Forest Grove, Ore.
• Kendra De Hoog and Kassie Howarth combined for 23 kills and Blue Mountain (37-4, 1 3-0) beat Community Colleges of Spokane 22-25, 25-1 9, 25-1 8, 25-1 4 in an NWAACC contest at Spokane Falls.
Kate Hart and Annie Arnzen had 1 2 kills apiece for CCS (26-9, 9-4).
Men’s soccer
Western Wyoming scored three first-half goals in beating North Idaho 3-1 in a NJCAA Western District match in Rock Springs, Wyo.
Lucas Zirotti scored for NIC.
• San Diego (1 0-6, 8-1) took advantage of short-handed Gonzaga, beating the Bulldogs (4-1 2, 0-9) 1-0 in WCC play in Spokane.
Connor Brandt scored the only goal in the 73rd minute. GU senior defender James Partee was ejected with 23 minutes to play after receiving his second yellow card for spiking the ball.
Men’s basketball
Connor Hill led four players in double figures with 18 points and Idaho beat Central Washington 92-75 in an exhibition game in Moscow, Idaho.
• Jalil Abdul-Bassit, Keon Lewis and Mikey Hope all scored 19 points as North Idaho (2-0) held on to beat Arizona Western 86-81 in a nonconference game in Yuma, Ariz.
Women’s basketball
Alyssa Charlston made all eight of her shots and led three players in double figures with 21 points as Idaho beat Western Oregon 93-62 in an exhibition game in Moscow, Idaho.
