2 House incumbents fall victim to redistricting

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two House incumbents have lost re-election bids in Maryland and North Carolina districts that were reshaped by legislatures controlled by their political opponents.

Republican Roscoe Bartlett’s western Maryland district was redrawn to add Democratic Washington suburbs. Democrat Larry Kissell saw Republican areas added to his district between Charlotte and Fayetteville, N.C.

Bartlett, 86, was defeated by Democratic businessman John Delaney. Kissell, 61, was defeated by Republican Richard Hudson, a former Capitol Hill aide.

Republicans were driving toward reasserting control of the House. They had won 143 seats and were leading for 62 others. For control, they would need 218. Democrats had won 87 and were leading for 48.

Democrats had hoped to add 25 seats to regain control of the House, but that size gain now seems beyond reach.
