Democrats gain 2 more seats in Northeast

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats have picked up a couple more seats from Republicans in the Northeast as Carol Shea-Porter in New Hampshire and Sean Patrick Maloney in New York defeated Republicans serving their first term in office.

Shea-Porter defeated Rep. Frank Guinta in a rematch of their contest two years ago. The victory means that both New Hampshire seats went to the Democrats on Tuesday.

Maloney, a former aide to President Bill Clinton, defeated Rep. Nan Hayworth, who was a political newcomer when she unseated a two-term Democrat in the state’s Hudson Valley.

Overall, however, Republicans regained control of the House.
