In brief: Man dies after truck rolls down hill

From Wire Reports

CARBONADO, Wash. – Searchers in Pierce County have located the body of a young Auburn, Wash., man whose friend hiked for hours to get help after their truck rolled multiple times down a hill at a remote off-road vehicle park near Mount Rainier.

The 21-year-old survivor told authorities the two had been driving around the park when the truck went down a steep embankment. KIRO-TV reported that the survivor said his 23-year-old friend was unresponsive when he left to get help. He said he walked for miles before reaching the town of Carbonado.

KOMO-TV reported the friend helped guide an East Pierce Fire & Rescue crew back to the crash site on Thursday. They followed a trail of blood from the vehicle to the victim’s body.

Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said it appears the victim managed to make his way some distance before dying. He was not immediately identified.

Portland fluoride issue on 2014 ballot

PORTLAND – Officials said a referendum drive has succeeded in putting Portland’s plans to fluoridate city water on the ballot in May 2014.

The Oregonian reported that the development halts the city’s plans to add fluoride to Bull Run water, which serves the city and other customers – about a quarter of the state.

Clean Water Portland’s drive needed only 19,000 valid signatures but got more than 33,000.

The group said it plans an initiative campaign to put more restrictions on the city’s fluoride efforts.

A leader of the group promoting dental health and backing the City Council’s vote expressed confidence Portland voters would get accurate information and support fluoridation.

Student wounds self in shooting

KITTITAS, Wash. – Authorities said a 17-year-old Kittitas High School student wounded himself with a pistol he stole from a family member’s gun cabinet.

The Ellensburg Daily Record reported the teenager was sent Thursday to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Earlier in the day, the teen had arrived at school saying he had been shot.

The secondary school was locked down and law enforcement officers, a State Patrol aircraft and K9 dogs were deployed to look for the reported shooter.

But Kittitas County Undersheriff Clay Myers said investigators determined the wound was self-inflicted.
