Wakefield leads WSU cross country

Todd Wakefield finished in 14th place and the Washington State men’s cross country team took seventh at the NCAA West Regional at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle.

Wakefield finished the 10,000-meter course in 30 minutes, 1 second, improving on his 39th-place finish at last year’s meet.

Also finishing inside the top 40 for WSU was Drew Jordan (36th, 30:27), Andrew Gonzales (37th, 30:27) and Lee George (39th, 30:27).

Gonzaga, led by Chris Boyle’s 66th-place finish, placed 14th. Boyle crossed in 30:51. EWU freshman David Thor took 83rd (31:13).

The Gonzaga women also took 14th place. GU’s Emily Thomas completed the 7,000-meter course in 20:45, good enough for 40th place. Lindsey Drake was 49th in 20:54. WSU was 19th and Idaho was 20th.

• Shadle Park graduate Nathan Wietz, a freshman at Northern Arizona, took 24th at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships in Ft. Collins, Colo.

Men’s soccer

Mauricio De Leon’s goal in the 61st minute proved to be the difference as San Francisco (5-7-4, 3-5-2) blanked Gonzaga (4-13-1, 0-10-1) 1-0 in a West Coast Conference match in San Francisco.

The match was the season finale for both teams.

• Michael Uyehara’s goal in the 107th minute gave No. 24 Washington (12-4-3, 7-1-2) a 1-0 double-overtime win over Oregon State (6-9-3, 1-7-2) in a Pac-12 Conference match in Corvallis, Ore.

The pairings for the NCAA tournament will be announced on Monday.

Men’s basketball

Three players scored in double figures and North Idaho used excellent free-throw shooting to get past Northwest College 75-64 in a nonconference game at Williston State College in Williston, N.D.

Mikey Hope scored 12 points, Mike Middlebrooks had 11 and Jalil Abdul-Bassit added 10 for the Cardinals (4-1). NIC made 25 of 30 free throws.

William Coleman had a game-high 21 points for Northwest College (3-2).

Women’s basketball

Keani Albanez scored 17 points and Gonzaga overcame a nine-point halftime-deficit to beat UC Riverside 60-53 in a nonconference season-opener in Riverside, Calif.

Haiden Palmer added 14 points and six steals for the Bulldogs, who outscored UC Riverside 41-25 in the second half.

• Chaundra Sewell had 22 points and seven rebounds as Wyoming (1-0) dumped Idaho 86-53 in a nonconference game in Laramie, Wyo. Christina Salvatore led the Vandals (0-1) with 12 points.

• Jazmine Davis led all players with 25 points as Washington edged Saint Mary’s 70-68 in Seattle in a season-opener for both teams.

• Katie Buskey and Kabri Emerson scored 14 points apiece as North Idaho eased past Northwest College 86-61 in a nonconference game in Williston, N.D. Renae Mokrzycki had 13 points and Mollie Kramer chipped in 10 for the Cardinals (3-0).

Arena football

The Spokane Shock signed wide receiver Adron Tennell and offensive lineman Ryan Cave.
